Ischaemic heart disease is a consequence of coronary atherosclerosis, which is a systemic inflammatory disease. The spleen plays a crucial role in the immune response by releasing various immune cells that contribute to both innate and adaptive immune processes in the coronary atherosclerotic plaque and ischaemic myocardium. The article discusses how prolonged inflammation can lead to ischaemic heart failure and the complex interactions between the spleen and the autonomic nervous system that influence cardiovascular outcomes. It also examines the implications of splenectomy on mortality rates from ischaemic heart disease.
