American Diabetes Association, University of Florida, and others
MASLD, previously known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a significant but frequently unrecognized issue among people with diabetes, especially those with type 2 diabetes and obesity. The condition affects a substantial portion of this population, leading to serious health risks such as metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (MASH), cirrhosis, and liver-related mortality. Despite these risks, awareness among patients and healthcare providers remains low, necessitating a call to action for early identification and intervention. This report emphasizes the need for screening and risk stratification to improve liver health outcomes.
