The guideline encourages use of Venous Blood Gases (VBG) for monitoring response to care, and this may be absent at the lower level facilities. Caution should also be used when using only ketones to monitor the patient progress. Thus, if patient is severely ill or critical, lower level facilities must escalate care for the full picture of the patient to be accounted for during the management.
