Albumin is the most abundant circulating protein in the human body, playing a crucial role in maintaining plasma oncotic pressure and carrying out various biological functions. Despite its importance, the administration of albumin is often based on the assumption that correcting hypoalbuminemia will yield clinical benefits, a notion that is not always supported by scientific evidence. This article reviews the appropriate and inappropriate uses of albumin, particularly in the context of decompensated cirrhosis, where its administration has been extensively studied and solid recommendations can be made.
