Gastroenterology
The liver is situated in the upper right abdomen beneath the diaphragm and above the stomach. It consists of four lobes (right, left, caudate, quadrate) and contains 50,000–100,000 hepatic lobules, each built around hepatocyte plates and a central sinusoid. Portal triads surrounding each lobule provide arterial, venous, and biliary inflow. The organ performs key roles in metabolism, detoxification, immune defense, hormone inactivation, heat production, and bile secretion, storing glycogen, vitamins, and minerals.
