Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is commonly seen in patients with acute brain injury (ABI), with prevalence rates reaching as high as 35%. These patients often present additional risk factors for ARDS compared to the general critical care population. The review emphasizes the importance of tailored ventilation strategies, such as low tidal volumes and permissive hypercapnia, while also considering the risks of brain hypoxia and elevated intracranial pressure associated with certain practices. The article aims to provide insights into the management of ventilation in this vulnerable patient group.
