The trial was conducted across 11 European hospitals and involved critically ill adults with acute organ failures. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either interferon gamma - 1b or a placebo. The primary outcome measured was the incidence of hospital-acquired pneumonia or all-cause mortality within 28 days. The study was halted after safety analyses indicated potential harm associated with the treatment.
